I originally got the idea for the site sometime in late July 2002, and started doing some initial design work and planning in August. However, that's exam time for me so work pretty much stopped until after school was done. Late August and early September I worked to get it done. The site was finished and unleashed upon the world on September 8th 2002!
Of course, the site looked much different back then. The old design was kind of ugly (IMHO) and less useful. Also there was no capacity for user reviews. Here's what the old site looked like:

During the summer of 2003, I decided to redesign the entire site to make it more user-friendly, better looking, and more useful by including more information about each store and allowing users to review the stores. The new site design was completed and tested in late August 2003, nearly one year after the original design was finished! Here's how the site looked in 2003:

The current design was created much more quickly than the previous two, due to its simpler and cleaner design and also due to the fact that I'm now more experienced with dynamic web development. I think that the current version is the best and most efficient version of the site yet, and I hope that you agree!
Who made this site? My name's Darren Hewer, aka "emmzee". I've created several sites in the past. The most popular by far is
dosgames.com, a huge archive of over 300 free DOS games. I've also created several other sites, see them at my personal homepage
emmzee.com. I created VGStores for several of reasons ... firstly, I wanted to get some experience with PHP/mySQL website design. I have quite a bit of experience with HTML but not with web databases and dynamicly generated pages. Secondly, I believe that this is a useful (if niche) site that many people will use. Thirdly, I wanted to make some money. ;)
